An He 111H-1 is loaded with small bombs used as target indicators. By marking out targets on the ground, various kinds of bombs of this sort were introduced to show the following aircraft where to drop their loads. The first He Ills used by KGr 100 and other combat units of the Luftwaffe were only equipped to carry up to eight 250kg bombs – a total weight of 2000 kg.

This He 111H-3 (6N+EK) belongs to 2/KGr 100. Together with He 111H-Is this aircraft operated over Britain at the end of August 1940. Eight crews of 1/KGr 100 and 2/KGr 100 and airmen from KG 27, KG 40, KG 51 and KG 55 were sent out to destroy targets in the Liverpool area. During these raids the battleship HMS Prince of Wales was hit by bombs dropped by a KGr 100 crew.
